REVIEW

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Hauntings. The book is easy to read, with Oliver’s evocative storytelling making each page turn effortlessly. However, it felt more like a history of the UK with a ghostly atmosphere rather than a traditional book on the paranormal. This unique approach gave the book a distinctive charm, as it provided a deeper understanding of the places and their histories. Oliver's ability to connect the supernatural with historical events creates a captivating narrative that inviting readers to ponder the mysteries of the unknown.

One aspect I particularly liked was how Neil Oliver related the stories to his own relationship with death and his father. This personal touch added a layer of emotional depth to the book, making it more than just a historical account. It felt like a conversation with a friend who is sharing not just facts, but also his own reflections and experiences. This emotional resonance adds a human element to the ghostly tales, making them more relatable and engaging.

For me, some of the standout chapters were Sandwood Bay near Cape Wrath, Raynham Hall and the Brown Lady, the Tower of London, Mary King’s Close, and Borley Rectory. These chapters had more of a classic ghost story feel, which I personally enjoyed. The spooky ambiance and chilling stories in these chapters had me captivated, eagerly anticipating the revelations concealed within each setting.

SCPUK CONCLUSION

Hauntings is a fascinating read for anyone interested in history, folklore, and the supernatural. While it may not be a typical ghost story collection, its blend of history and personal narrative makes it a compelling and thought-provoking book which I highly recommend. Neil Oliver's ability to intertwine the past with the present, the factual with the supernatural, creates a reading experience that is both enlightening and haunting.
